Question by John S: coins: are american silver eagles/walking libertys worth anything?
i have a 1944 in fair to good condition
also please look at my other questions

Answer by Taiping
The 1944 Liberty Walking 1/2 dollar 1916-1947 should not be confused with the bullion coin the American silver eagle. One was actually made for use as money, the other either for collectors or speculators in the silver market. They used the liberty walking design because it is considered by most as one of America's most artistic coins. The mint mark if any is on the eagle side above right of the H in half. None are really scarce and the ones in low grades are worth their silver value, minus a percentage for the dealer. It has .36169 oz of pure silver. With silver in the .00 dollar range it is worth about .52. It was made the year that the U.S. finally started to get the upper hand on the Axis powers of World war II, and could have peen in a pay envelope of a person building a bomber.

Question by anubis: How to tell the difference on a 2008 silver eagle?
How do you tell the difference between the 2007 reverse and the 2008 reverse? I can't see the difference between any years reverses. I keep seeing these "Error Eagles" for sale for 0 and up. Stating that it is a 2008 with a 2007 reverse. Please tell me how to see the difference.

Best answer:

Answer by curtisports2
There are several noticeable differences, but the easiest to see is the U in United. The 2007 reverse has uneven thickness of sides or 'legs' of the U, and no serif (what some call a spur) at the bottom right. The 2008 reverse shows a more-uniform in appearance U with the serif.

Question by woodson532003: How many Silver Eagles have been minted this year?
I understand they are out of blanks.

Best answer:

Answer by Taiping
The normal 2009 silver eagle bullion coin is not rare for dealers are selling them for or so. The 2009-W proof and 2000-W special satin ones are still not available from the mint and they are not saying anything about them. So on those you will have to wait until the mint releases them or at least starts the ordering.

Question by Vulcan Windsurfer: How does one cash in silver bullion?
I know some people choose to invest in precious metals, such as American Silver Eagle coins. I know someone with a bar of silver bullion also.

My question is, when the time comes in 10, 20 years that they want to cash in their investment, where do they go? It's not like there's a "Precious Metals Exchange Station" next to every Starbucks. Is it difficult to do, and what kind of fee is involved?

Best answer:

Answer by STEVEN F
You DON'T cash in coins or bullion. You SELL it to someone that wishes to BUY it.

Question by Pietro: What coins should I buy for my collection?
I'm 25 years old, and recently I decided that I needed a hobby. So I came up with the idea to start a coin collection. I've been buying U.S. Silver Dollar Eagles (some slabbed some not), old Morgan Dollars, and 90% pre 1964 silver coins (junk silver).

I've been going to all of the local coin shops trying to find a dealer that I can trust. Well, today I went to a coin shop that I had never been to before. He gave free appraisals, so I decided to stop in to see what he thought of my collection so far. I explained to him that I was relatively new at this. Upon looking at my coins, he said that I had been overcharged because basically all of my coins were only worth melt value. It was very discouraging.

My question is; what coins should I buy in order to have a collection that I can be proud of? a collection that will hold it's value? A collection that one day will be profitable?

Should I only buy slabbed coins? which ones? What silver coins should I buy? what gold coins should I buy? He said that I didn't have any "special" coins? what did that mean?

Here is what I have managed to buy in one month:
slabbed 1986 Silver Eagle MS69
2008 Silver Eagle
1oz silver bullion bar
1 oz silver philharmonic 2008
1902-o Morgan Silver Dollar VG
1902 Morgan Silver Dollar VF
1901 Morgan Silver Dollar F
3oz of pre 1964 90% junk silver
1913 Type1 Buffaloe Nickle
1905 5 piece cent

Can somebody please help guide me in the right direction! Tell me what I should be looking for, and what I should be buying?

Thank You
Are there any books that you would recommend?

Best answer:

Answer by BD in NM
There is an old adage in the hobby that says; "Buy the book before you buy the coin." In other words educate yourself a little bit and you will enjoy the hobby better. Get a copy of the Red Book as a basic reference book, join a local coin club and maybe even join the ANA.

Your local coin dealers should know how to contact a local coin club and the ANA website is money.org.

As far as what to collect, that is more of a personal decision. You could try to put together a type set which would let you collect a sample of many different coin types. This would give you a feel for what is out there and what is not. Once you have narrowed down your interest you could focus on that coin series or type.

I actually have several different coin collections that I work on at different times. I focus on Lincoln cents but have a type set I am working on and also collect Confederate currency. There is also the coin that is just cool and interesting that I will buy every once in a while.

Don't let the dealer discourage you. It sounds a little like he was trying to get you to keep coming back to his shop with a negative comment about the purchases you made at the other dealers. Most dealers are pretty straight up and will deal fairly with you. Just remember they can only offer you wholesale prices when you sell to them. They are in the business to put bread on their table and can't do that if they are buying at retail.

In the end a little education will help you spot someone who is being straight up and someone who is not.

Most important have fun.

Question by Ron P: What is the typical Bid/Ask price for gold and silver bullion coins?
I called a dealer and he said that I pay over spot to purchase the gold, and that he will buy back gold for over spot. Does that sound like standard practice? And silver is .50 over spot to buy and .50 to buy back. Todays prices were 1.oz Gold and .oz Silver and these were American Eagles.

Best answer:

Answer by Kevin H
A premium over spot price is standard practice in the Bullion Market. The amounts you describe are alittle high for gold but good for silver.
Premiums depend on several factors:
Supply & Demand
Amount of bullion purchased
Brand of Mint (Silver & Gold American eagle's versus a no-name Mint)
Current Market Conditions(Hot/Cold)
New bullion or Circulated

You can get like 90% silver coins for as low as .50 over spot.
Gold American Eagles around .00 over spot. Silver Eagle's - over spot.
